Burlington, Vermont/Volunteer Coordinators
Expert: David Beckett - 2/12/2002
QuestionHi David
I'm interested in finding some local Directors, Coordinators or Recruiters of Volunteers for organizations and agencies, especially in the Arts, to do some informational interviews.
I'm considering changing my career and feel really drawn to working in the Arts and with others, in an administrative position, so I'd love to know more from the people who do it what their job is like.
My question to you - Do you know who some of these folks are? Can you recommend a few people who would probably be receptive to giving me some time.
Thanks so much.

AnswerHi Leslie-
This is not an easy question. Yes, I know organizations like this. But the volunteer coordinators are, I suspect, often volunteers themselves. Or they are among the busiest employees of any given organization. They may be helpful and friendly but simply not have much time to talk to you.
If you don't mention me...I'll suggest a couple of people ;-)
I'd start by calling The United Way. They recruit volunteers within businesses and organizations to spearhead efforts within those groups.
I'd call The Burlington Discover Jazz Festival. Ask Tara to suggest somebody to talk to. The Festival uses a huge contingent of volunteers and has a volunteer coordinator.
I'd also call First Night Burlington. This is a similar situation to The Jazz Festival.
Call, also, The Flynn Center For The Performing Arts. Ask for Carol Goodrum.
Ski areas, interestingly enough, are another source of information like this. Many ski areas use volunteers Ski Patrol people. Some also have a contingent of people who act as official hosts with a set number of days requireed in exchange for a season pass. The ski areas I know best have a paid staff member who is responsible for coordinating this group and providing other customer service as well.
Don't mention me...unless somebody offers you a job, in which case you can sing my praises and you can both buy me lunch ;-)
Call me if you need more help
