Spot of cigar burn
Spot of cigar burn
QUESTION: Hello Jim,

I hope u had a nice vacation :)!

I am writing you again to let u know about my healing.
After about three weeks after the burn the brownish epidermis disappeared
(dead skin). I expected the spot to be brownish underneath. However, it is
white ?! It is much lighter than my normal / natural skin colour. Is that normal
?
I have been treating the spot with aloe vera gel and protected it from the sun
by either putting on sunblocker or a patch.
Is it okay to go on like this ?
Do u think a discoloration will remain forever ?
Is there anything to prevent it ?

Hope to hear from you !
Thank you again for your answer & kind regards,

Halima

ANSWER: Hi Halima,

I would suspect thatyour treatment has been fine but the burn may be beeper in spots than we had hoped. These spots may dissapear over some time but some time may be required. Lets discontinue the sunscreen but continue with the aloe vera for a while (30 days) and see how things go.

QUESTION: So, Jim does it mean the spot will remain ?
What does beeper in spot mean ?

And, can I go to the sun without wearing a sunprotection ?

Answer
Hi Again,

It is a little early to tell, but I suspect that most of the scar will dissapear over the next several months. Try to continue with the Aloe Vera but discontinue with the sunscreen for about 50% of the time for a month and lets see how the burn behaves.

Expertise

I can answer a variety of questions concerning the physical care of burns and burn patients which commonly are of interest to both patients and their families. Also I may be helpful in suggesting lifestyle modifications which will help with a more complete recovery from a serious burn. I can also accept questions regarding the physical classifications of burns and the implications regarding the size, depth, and location of burns. What I cannot answer based on my own knowledge and experience I can refer to my current and former collegues in the field including the plastic and trauma surgeons and burn recovery organizations. In many of these cases I will provide a line of communication directly to a specific expert or organization. While I can describe general treatments routines with which I am experienced,I cannot answer questions dealing with specifuc diagnosis of conditions or problems. Additionally, please understand that the area of burn treatments is an experimental one in which there is constant progress and change. Each Burn Center invests a major effort in the development of new materials, treatments, medications, and techniques. In this area of constant change and growth no one can be fully aware of all treatment courses employed.
