How was she inspired to write the 9th Wave?

Hi Lily. The first question is easy: since 1978. The second one is harder. I don't know the definitive answer. Basically it's about someone who is in the water. How they got there and what happened to them is open to speculation. It seems that this person is in the water for a long time but that may only be relative. Sometimes I think they get rescued, at other times I think not.
The gaffaweb entry says this:
While Kate has never spoken of the events in The Ninth Wave other than metaphorically, it has been speculated persuasively that the Fastnet yachting disaster may have provided partial inspiration for this work.
