Question
Hi there,

I've probably looked too hard at these lyrics to see what is probably obvious to me...

I was hoping that you could let me know the meaning or story that is being said.

Thanks

Andrew

Answer
Hello Andrew and thanks for the question. This song is written from a man's perspective and was originally written by Kate for a movie.
John Hughes contacted Kate about writing a song for a specific scene in his movie "She's Having a Baby".He sent her a clip of the scene in which a young father to be waits nervously while his partner is in the delivery room giving birth to their child.
So the song is sort of a narrative of this man's thoughts; how he could have been there more for his partner and worried about her, thinking the worst, how things sometimes go wrong during delivery, etc.
For a more detailed explanation I suggest logging onto "Cloudbusting:Kate Bush in Her Own Words".Here you can see what Kate herself has said about this and other songs.Just click on Kate talks about her music.
I apologize for taking so long to answer.I was on vacation for three weeks and forgot to notify all experts.
Thanks again for the question and have a great day!

Bush, Kate
