Question
I am a professional RN.  I need advice on what to put on my labcoat for work at a hospital.  I have no office, must carry a brief case at all times and my work takes me to all units of the facility.  I am in contact with many people.  My jacket is white and I've been mistaken for a doctor before.  I want to avoid this unethical and illegal confusion at all costs and still appear professional.  I want to embroider my name, RN or BSN or both on my white jacket.  However, I a not a 'staff nurse.' and need to eliminate that confusion too. Should I list my job title under my name? I also need to put the hospital name and my department name on the other side.   Do I list any of my credentials or limit those to my business card?  I don't want my jacket to be cluttered. I want it to be clean and professional.  Open to all suggestions.

Dear Kay:
I suggest you embroider RN with your title under your name as you suggest with the hospital name and department on the other side.  Your name and title should be on your right side, the proper place for your name. Use a thread color that is not used by the hospital or medical staff.  Your credentials should only be on your business card.
