Question
I worked for a transportation company for 17yrs as a school bus aide for special needs children. With a co-worker I left for another company for more hours. That company disolved after a yr bought out by another bus company. After 4mo they only had part time work for me. I would like to go back to original company. Would like to write to them asking to take me back, what should I say in the letter? Thank you.

Answer
Dear Ms. Peterson,
There is no harm in asking for your old job back. The worst that they can do is say 'no thank
you'.

The letter should be fairly simple. You need to introduce yourself (in case there have been
changes to the office staff)and let them know that you had the pleasure of working for X Co. for
17 years as an aide to special needs children. You enjoyed the work as well as being in the
employ of X Co in particular. Nothing could have induced you to leave save for the poor economy
and the need to make more money/work more hours. You took a gamble on the Y Co. and were sorry
that they did not live up to their early promise. Now,after a year away from X Co, you find
yourself wishing that you had never left. You would like to apply for your old position if it
is still available. Please see enclosed resume (don't assume that they remember all of your details
also it is a good chance to remind them of how valuable you will be to their company.) Make sure
to have all of your contact information on the cover letter as well as the resume. (make it easy
for them to find you) Thank them for their consideration and close.

I wish you every success. It isn't easy to write a letter and admit a mistake, but you will
feel better for having sent it,come what may.

  Best regards,
