Business Etiquette/Follow up after second interview

Question
On 08/12/11 I went for a second interview ( they called me about one month after the first interview). In my opinion, the interview went well. I did ask when will they make a decision and the HR manager stated by next Friday 08/19. I didn't get a call so I assumed I didn't get the job but on Monday 08/22 she called to give me an update, stating she was going to call that same day my personal and professional references which she did because one of the doctors I used to work told me and she even mentioned that she (HR manager) sounded really interesting in me. Anyway the same day the HR manager called around 430pm because my current job was not able to give her work performance just hiring date and they needed some other supervisor contact information. I called her right away because I had some questions whether could be someone from my previous job or needed to be from my current job. She didn't call me back. I called her back the following day (Tuesday) to follow up - no call back. One of my current supervisor told me he would be able to give work performance on my behalf so even though I had not heard from her I called her back on Thursday (08/25)  with his contact information. She hasn't call me back whether she received the information and I honestly don't know what to do.
I'm applying for an administrator position for the county and I understand the process is long but I do not know if I should follow up with an e-mail or just let it go. Please help!

Answer
Dear Alex:
I understand how stressful job hunting is but patience is definitely part of it.  My suggestion is that you have made enough contact and the HR officer is going to take her time no matter what you do.  If I were you I would send one more email which should only state that you hope she has all the information she needs to evaluate your candidacy and if she needed anything more to let you know.  Then sit back and wait or pursue another opportunity.  Good etiquette and returning phone calls and emails on a timely basis is a trait that few have these days.

I really hope you get the job.  Can you write again and let me know?

All the best,
Cynthia Lett
