Question
I need the proper way to write a thank you letter to be published in the paper.  A friend of mine had a daughter that was 16 that passed away from cancer.  There was an overwhelming about of people that she can't individually thank them all.  She also wanted to do something directed specifically to the school.  They have done several things in honor of her daughter....what are your suggestions.

Answer
Dear Melissa,
Thanks for asking this good question. Thank you notes or calls to as many people as possible is always a good idea as long as addresses or phone numbers are handy. Any thank you note needs to come from the heart and can be very short. The loss of a child is a terrible tragedy and is overwhelming. The mourning period can be very long as well. Perhaps a family spokesperson or close friend such as yourself could assist by composing a note. I do not know any of the parties so would not be the right person to write the note. Speaking with the school principal might shed some light on how to address the school community at large. The minister at her church would also likely be very helpful. Sorry not to be of more help but I hope this is of some assistance. Jay
