Business Software/template in OpenOffice

Question
I have to convert a Word.dot file into an OpenOffice Writer template.  The Word template has text form fields for entry.  The translation feature in OpenOffice successfully translated the layout/format but not the entry fields which all have 00000 and cannot be used for entry.  For the life of me, I cannot figure out any of the template toolbars in Writer nor how to modify my less-than-perfect .ott file.  What am I missing?  How do the equivalent of form fields work?  Can what I'm trying to do be accomplished?

Thanks,
Linda

Answer
Try the following: In MS Word, open the template, then save as a regular .doc file. Then open the file in OO Writer. After editing the file (for layout, margins, etc. if needed), save as a OO template.

OO has a new feature called xForms. It is used, for example, with databases to design input forms -- form inputting information into a database. (a la Access forms) I am guessing that xForms is more than you need.

If my answer is too general, ask again with more details.

I can answer questions like: How can I use use the writer program in Open Office to make a table? How can I use the spreadsheet program in Open Office to create a small database and sort it? How do I enter formulas in the calc software?

I cannot answer questions about the draw or presentation programs in Open Office. I cannot answer questions about Open Office that pertain to operating systems other than Windows.
