Question Can you recommend a fairly robust Data Base Software, that is intuitive to the user, that will maintain relational information about a group of units, their parts and activities carried out related to each unit. I want to develop lists or libraries of parts from which I can select a set to assign to a unique unit. I want to develop reports regarding the characteristics of a unit. I want a report a cronilogical listing of a activities and id the related unit.
I want to identify a database software that I can invest my time, learn to use and develop a viable product as an end result.
I am hoping you can suggest some software products that I can look into.
Answer There are currently two database development platforms that cover your needs. Microsoft Access and Filemaker. I would highly recommend Access. It can be used on many levels so the novice can create fairly robust apps with little or no coding, while the intermediate and advanced users can make it do just about anything they want. access sis also the most supported product with dozens of books and several support sites dedicated to it.
Filemaker is OK but doesn't have as much support as Access does.
Access also has a bunch of templates some of which may get you started on what sounds like a bill of materials app.
Hope this helps,
