Question
Hi,
I have a windows Vista computer that used to have Microsoft Office 2003. Now I am installing Microsoft Office 2010. It shows a message that I should run on a system with Vista XP1 X64 or X86 flatform. I guess that I should update my windows Vista, however, it is fully updated.
Please help me install this software. Thank you very much.

Answer
Hi - Unless you have some intermediate skill in computers, you may not want to do this on your own and may want to get in person help. Nevertheless, I will try to help you.

First, I would address the root cause of your problem. You want to run Office 2010 on your computer with Vista O/S. If you are getting a x64/x86 mismatch error, it's most likely that you are trying to install a 64bit MS Office on a 32bit O/S(Vista). The vice-versa can never be true. In other words, you can run a 32bit software on a 64bit O/S. Thus, below are two possible solutions:

1) Exchange your 64bit Office for a 32bit version. (Easy Solution)
2) Upgrade your computer to a 64bit O/S (Futuristic Solution)

Pros for #1:
1) Easy solution. A 32bit software will install without any problem
2) Anyone with little experience can perform this
3) No hassles of solution #2

Cons for #1:
1) 32 bit is becoming yesterday's technology, although a majority of existing computers still run 32bit.
2) You may need to convince your local store or customer service to replace your software. Can be difficult once you have opened the box.

Pros for #2:
1) Futuristic Solution. You will be installing the mainstream technology of tomorrow, although you may not need that performance.
2) This may be your only solution other than buying another copy of 32bit Office, if you can't get the customer service to do an exchange.

Cons for #2:
1) Hassles in preparing for an O/S upgrade. You will need to make backups for all your personal data, software, and drivers. You will loose existing data in your computer.
2) Possibly not a solution for a beginner in computers.
3) 64bit O/S may not be compatible with all computers in terms of hardware. You may need to buy a new computer.

Personally, I would suggest you buy another or exchange your copy of office for a 32bit version. It may cost you more, but at least you can get it to work. If you have not registered your Office copy with MS, you may be able to sell it to someone else on eBay or something. Although this is a gray area and am not sure if it is supported by MS's policies, even if the system will allow you to register in someone else's name.

If you decide going for an O/S upgrade, I would suggest buying Win7 64bit. Ask a follow up question if you need more clarifications.
