Ok, what you are talking about is more often referred to as contact management or CRM. ACT is the market leader in this category, but its not freeware.

since you want something free, I suggest going to tucows.com and searching for contact managment specifiying freeware as the license type. One obvious advantage to freeware is you can download and try each until you find one that suits your needs.
