Question
i have a friend who has a small business.
it involves people buying 50 units and taking some of these units each time they visit the store.
much the same way a bank works they "deposit" on their account X units.....they then "buy" or redeem units and gradually the account is diminished.
currently, they are writing the customers account balances on paper cards and subtracting each time a "purchase" is made......
is there some software (affordable) that will do this function...
account balance
name and address
details of account
etc.

Depends on how you define affordable. You can probably do this with Quickbooks. You can also do it with any database program.
