Question
Hello Leslie,

Our church has had several gifts donated to our youth group. (NFL football tickets totaling $280)  Besides thanking them for their contribution, do I need to also include a paragraph for tax purposes stating that they did not receive any goods or services for their donation?

Please help!

Thanks!

Answer
Debbie,

I think you may want to address that question to a lawyer. Certainly including a paragraph or two about the donation for tax purposes makes sense.

Could you send a thank you note and include a separate document that names the donation and amount with the appropriate legal language, so the person donating the gifts would have something to show the tax man? Separating the legal document from the thank you note may be more courteous as well.

I understand that All Experts has folks who know the law that may be able to help you.
