QuestionHi.
What is Terms of Reference?
Can you kindly explain where would one use Terms of Reference?
I have just completed a draft copy on my assignment, and I also need to do a page or so on Terms of Reference.
Are you able to help me on this matter?
Thank you for your efforts well in advance.
Regards.
Jamie
AnswerDear Jamie,
Thank you for writing to AllExperts. Terms of Reference refers to a document (page or two) that explains the project.
Purpose (of project, group, team, assignment). It may define the scope, objectives, and scope.
Structure and Accountability (length of service, who reports to whom, independencies)
Responsibilities (of major functions, who reports to whom)
Consultation, publication, and external relations (Must you speak to the media, write reports to Senior management, write PR materials?). What publications must you produce?
Relations with Fund staff and management: We all have customers. Sometimes our customer is upper management, sometimes it's another department, sometimes it's the end user. This section might show the relationship between your group and its customer.
It works as a contract between members in the group.
Hope this helps. For further information, you can also Google "Terms of Reference."
Sincerely,
Kaylyn
