Question
Always problems with the comma!

My dog is fast and that is why I like him.

Should a comma be placed after the word fast in the "My dog" sentence? Also, is the part of the sentence after the word and in the "My dog" sentence considered a sentence by itself?

Answer
The sentence is a compound sentence just like this one, and the independent clauses should be separated with a comma before the correlative conjunction.

Leaving aside the unfortunate misspelling of Montreal, you will find this page helpful in understanding the difference between simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences.
