QuestionHai,
I am a copy editor looking forward for openings in technical writing. I have basic computer literacy. Since I do not have any knowledge about softwares like Robohelp, frame maker etc which technical writers use is it necessary for me to acquire knowledge about these softwares to find a technical writing job.
Thank You,
With Regards,

AnswerDear Hai,
Thank you for your question.
In a tight job market such as the one in the USA, having technical writing and software experience can give you a competitive edge when you apply for technical writing positions.
I would suggest you teach yourself the advanced features of MS Word, if you haven't already done so. After that, learn FrameMaker and RoboHelp. Consider enrolling in a college or university technical communication program with an internship opportunity. Enrolling in a technical communication program that offers an internship would provide you with opportunities to learn software, to build your portfolio, and to gain technical writing experience.
Although you may find it expensive, consider joining the nearest chapter of Society for Technical Communication, STC, a worldwide professional group of 22,000 members. Doing so will provide you with continuing training and networking opportunities. You can go to
http://www.stc.org for more information.
Learn more about technical writing, answers to frequently asked questions, and employment opportunities by going to

I hope this helps.
Again, thank you for your question.
Best wishes for your success!
Sincerely,
