Business & Technical Writing/What do I need to get started in tech writing?

Question
Hi. I recently graduated from school with BA in English and have been trying to figure out how to start career. The field of technical writing seems like the best choice right now, but all the wanteds saying "Junior Tech Writer, Entry-Level" ask for 3 or years in the industry. I was wondering what I could do to break into the industry. My dad has been suggesting pursuing some kind of mechanical engineering track at nightschool, but the job posts I've examined haven't specifically asked for that kind of background so I'm not sure if that would help me either. I was wondering if you had any suggestions on something I could do to get my "foot in the door." Thank you for time.

Answer
Most community colleges offer courses specifically in technical writing. You might take a couple of those. Then, be sure you know how to use well some of the standard software used. Just a rudimentary knowledge of Word is not sufficient. You have to be really good at managing large documents in Word, and that implies a thorough knowledge of styles and templates. Also, learn about Acrobat, Visio, FrameMaker, and Microsoft Project.

Then, just keep trying for entry-level positions. Sometimes, proofreading or editing positions can open the door.

Hope this helps.
