Business & Technical Writing/What is a quorum

Question
I need to know what a quorum is and why they are required at a meeting. Thanks

Answer
A quorum is the minimum number of officers of the organization required to do business. The actual number is usually specified in the bylaws or charter of the organization, but is most often set as a majority.

Thus, on a Board of Directors with nine members, if a majority of the Directors has been specified in the organization's charter as constituting a quorum, 5 would be the minimum present to conduct business. But it can be set higher or lower.

Hope this helps.
