Business & Technical Writing/useful links
Expert: Leslie - 11/23/2004
QuestionHi Leslie,
I am a relatively new instructional designer and am looking for great links on instructional design.
I'm particularly looking for links with information on the following areas:
· Assessments
· Storyboarding
· Audience Analysis
· Objectives
· Visualization/media strategies
· Task Analysis
Or in case there are no links on these specific topics, could you forward me great links on instructional design?
Thanks for your time,
Richa
AnswerRicha,
Sorry for the delay in responding. The holiday weeks are particularly busy.
The list of internet sites for instructional design are limited. Have you checked out ASTD (American Society of Training and Development)
http://www.astd.org/astd/Conferences/ICE/ICE04_Home.htm
or my personal favorite, ISPI (International Society of Performance Improvement)
http://www.ispi.org/ .
As a group, we don't share much about our work online, but you will find some great books. Rob Foshay published a book last year that I can recommend entitled something like How to Train anyone for anything... (I cannot recall the title, and the book is in storage right now.) It is a soup to nuts book on instructional design. Dick and Carey have a classic that is well known in the design world and easy to understand. I have also used government texts written by the earliest of scholars in this area, Leslie Briggs and ?? Gangne entitled NAVEDTRA 106A (Navy Education and Training 106A). These society websites can point you to the texts.
May I also suggest that you NOT use some of the online training or one week seminars. While you could get the basics, the real craft or art of design comes in working with good practioners. You may look for a school in your area that offers an instructional design curriculum.
Best of luck. Most people who take up the work of training using systematic instructional design love it and never want to leave.
