About Joel Linton
Expertise
I have travelled on business to 37 countries in the past 4 years -- visiting 4 or 5 major cities in one 7-day trip ! All this out of Chicago (my home base). I can assist with itinerary planning, suggestions what to pack, how to get to locations, and can answer general questions about what to do during non-work time, and how to survive "on your own" on the road. I have a few "tips" on how to make a 7 to 10 hour plane ride more comfortable, less jet-lagged and what to take on board to assist.

Business Travel - What language?

Question
Hey Joel,

I'm entering college as a freshman in August and am wondering what language I should study if I want to be an an econ or business major. French and Spanish are the languages  that are taught most in depth at my school while classes in Chinese, Italian, Latin, Russian and German are available. So, which one?

Answer
From my experiences I would assist your planning by suggesting that Spanish is a good option to consider -- spoken in one form or another in many countries of the world (in different dialects).  The other languages listed are not too "worldly" -- except French.  It all depends on your later life business/work environment -- if that is going to take you to Asian then Chinese is a good one, if not, then why do it ? if your business life is going to take you to Europe, then French, German and Spanish is good .... you see what I mean ?
But I do know that if you get to talk fluent Spanish, then Italian is easy to understand, and most of Latin America is covered.
Do you have one choice only ? .... if so, my advice is Spanish.  (Besides the real fact that the Hispanic nation worldwide is growing fast and will continue to do so).

Hope this helps ... please send the feedback to the site when requested.

Thanks and best regards

Joel
