Buying or Selling a Home/C of O

Question
If I want to convert by loft into a 1 or 2 bedroom do I need to obtain a new C of O?  Is that a painful and expensive process?

Answer
Hello Gloria,

Thanks for this question.

If you are doing construction on a building you usually need permits and the resulting COs to be sure you meet current zoning, building and safety codes.

The actual fees should not be too expensive, but the costs of conforming to current codes could be.  In some municipalities they make you add sprinklers to the whole building even if you make on little change to the building.  So, you have to know what the requirements are in advance so you can plan the expenses.

Good luck,

Hans

I am able to answer questions related to buying or selling residential real estate in New York. There are many questions buyers and sellers have about the process of buying or selling a home that they are afraid to ask or that might seem too simple to ask. For instance: in a house, why do some doors open in and some doors open out?
