Question
QUESTION: What is the easiest way to determine if a property is on the public sewer system or a private septic system?

Presumably a permit was issued for any plumbing work to connect to the city sewer--is there any capability to search those or the related data for property addresses?

The assessors office parcel info provides a wealth of information but I don't see any indicator on the property characteristics for sewer or septic.  I understand that this info is only 'deemed reliable'.

ANSWER: Hello David - Contact the city Water/sewer/refuse department and request a dye test. They will flush the dye in a toilet and check for the dye remnants in the sewer in front of the property. This is at least the typical process. There is no place that indicates whether the property is 'connected' to the sewer or not. Man-hole covers in the street is no indication either as not all properties may be connected. I hope this has assisted you. - Todd

QUESTION: Would there normally be any fee?  And is there any way this could be done for a property that is for sale and/or unoccupied?

Answer
Good Morning David - Normally there is no fee as sewer/septic is pertinent information to the purchase decision. You could contact the planning department and see if a the city can confirm a permit was granted. Usually you must know a very concise timeframe ordinarily rendering this option mute. I hope this further assists you. - Todd
