Question
If a person 89 yrs old, sold property in 2005, and doesn't have any document regarding the sale. Where does he seek the info. The State of Ca want him to pay taxes on income received.

Answer
First call the escrow company that handled the sale.  Most likely that's how the IRS found out about it anyway - the escrow company is obligated to send a report of each sale to the IRS.

If they can't help you, try calling the real estate agents that were involved in the sale.

If they don't have it, just ask the IRS for it.  Obviously they were given information about the sale from someone involved.

Best,
Lori
