Buying or Selling a Home/California property taxes

Question
My brother-in-law recently died. Since his estate was so small, a California attorney, referred us to paralegal. However, since the estate is so small, it is not one of her top priorities. The attorney we spoke with said my brother-in-law owes about $1,600.00 in property taxes. How do I verify that? The paralegal is in the process of transfering the deed to my father-in-law (next of kin). Since Harvey is deceased will the taxes be waived. Or is my father-in-law going to be responsible.

Answer
Hi Sheila-
I am sorry about your brother-in-law. I may not be the right person to answer this but if property taxes work the same way there as they do in Virginia- a quick call to the county tax assessor's should be able to let you know- sometimes they even have a website you can search on to tell you what's due and allow payment and no, they will not be waived if he is deceased. Hope this helps. Best, Toni
