Buying or Selling a Home/Real Estate agents commission

Question
I'm confused on how the real estate agent gets paid? We met with an agent. she has shown us some homes,but no mention  on how she gets her commission. Does the buyer or the seller pay her?

Answer
Dear Pat;
It is most common for the real estate agent to get paid from the proceeds of the sale before the Seller gets their money.  There are costs that are taken out and one of those costs is the commission that is distributed to both the Seller's agent and the Buyer's agent (if applicable).  Sometimes, if there is no agreement between agents then the Buyer's agent may go to his/her clients to request a commission payment for services but this is usually disclosed prior to any transaction.  I assume that you signed some sort of agency agreement and if so this should have been spelled out in the written agreement.  If not, ask for one and make sure that you are clear about your agent's responsibilities to you and visa versa.

Experience

Anyone who is in this business and who dedicates oneself to professionalism has continued to take classes and along with it,additional credentials, awards and honors. I can list a host of them, but my greatest accomplishments happen to be those of getting first time buyers (who didn't think they could afford to buy a home)into a home of their dreams. The look on their faces when I hand over the keys is worth all of the hard work.
