Buying or Selling a Home/2009 Housing Tax Credit

Question
Hello, I am hoping to get some help with a question about purchasing a house in 2009 and getting the $8000 credit.  I signed all the papers for my house in December 2008, and had a December date as the closing date on the papers we signed.  I gave the check for down payment then also.  The house was a foreclosure, and as I was dealing with a bank, there were a lot of delays and I didn't actually get the keys and (it was recorded with Maricopa county) until January 2, 2009.  I am confused on what would be my 'closing date' for the purpose of taxes, etc.  When I need to list my closing date, would it be when I signed the papers or got my keys?  Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am having trouble finding a clear answer.

Answer
Hello Sara - The actual closing date is the date listed as the "Settlement Date" on the HUD-a form you received from the lender with your closing documents. This is the date that is considered your settlement date AKA Closing date. If you have any other questions please reply. - Todd Menard
