Question
Hi,

I have a question about utilities: I want to save the most money from it:

I live in an apartment of four rooms with 6 people: I pay the following for utilities:

1. Electricity $110
2. Cable, Internet, Phone bill: $67
3. Water $290
4. Food $500
5. Car $300

It look a little over:

How do I save the most money from all of this? eg. can I used less gas by getting free gas mileage.  Can I used better electricity wire.  Can I spend less on food by using coupon.  How do I save the most money from these utilities?

Note: can you answer each one with specific answers.

Answer
Hi Henry,

I usually do not answer the above-type questions.  However, as to …

ELECTRICITY:  Newer appliances and heating/air-conditioning systems are usually more energy efficient and cost less money to operate.

CABLE, INTERNET, PHONE BILL:  Compare service providers and shop for the lowest rates.  Don’t pay for bells and whistles you don’t need or won’t use.

WATER:  Individual consumption governs what your bill will be; you cannot change the rates you are charged.  Some tips would be to make sure your toilet does not “run;” use shower heads that conserve water; front-loading washing machines use a LOT less water than top-loading washing machines.

FOOD:  Coupons will ALWAYS save you money when shopping, and “store” brands are generally just as good as some major brands and cost less.  When buying in bulk, be sure to check and make sure the price per (ounce, pound, or whatever) is less-expensive per ounce, pound, etc., than the same product in a smaller package.  This is where many people overpay for products without even realizing it, thinking larger, bulk-size packages cost less money – but you have to compare the cost you pay of each ounce, pound, etc.

CAR:  Makes/models that get high gas mileage will save you money.

I hope the above helps.

Regards,
Elizabeth
