Buying or Selling a Home/Mom on SS and wants to sell her home

Question
Will my mother be penalized for selling her home and not rebuying another one.  Her home should sell for about $80,000.  Will Social Security penalize her or take her check?
She will be moving to another state so will she qualify for low income housing for the elderly?

Answer
No, Martha. As long as she has lived there for two of the last five years (and I am sure she has), she has nothing to worry about. Social Security won't be bothering her. It depends on the state she moves to if you're concerned about her qualifying for low-income housing. Chances are she will not have a problem there, either. Just go looking for a home for her. You're going to enjoy yourself. I do wish you well.

Expertise

With more than 41 years as a real estate broker, I can solve most any problem presented. If I can`t, I do my research. Problems with mortgages, trust deeds, foreclosures, odd ways of conveying titles. Most any good Realtor can answer questions satisfactorily, but I answer questions that most cannot. Also, ask about my hard-copy newsletter, The Landed Gentry. It can also be sent to you via PDF.
