Buying or Selling a Home/Off-grid living in LA


Hello, I am hoping to buy some undeveloped land in Los Angeles soon. Being a shaggy hippie, I'm hoping to occupy this land with as low a footprint as possible. To that end I have a few questions

1)I would like to live in a yurt. As this is not a proper structure, will it require a permit to build?
2)Am I legally required to connect to any utilities except for water and sewage? I know I must connect to those for sanitation, but I was hoping to use a small solar generator for my electric needs and avoid gas altogether.

Hi Tim,

you need to check with the local zoning to the actual area/plot you are looking to purchase ... there are many zoning restrictions in Los Angeles county and many area by area order to 'live' on a property you must obtain an 'Occupany Certificate' from the city... that may not be possible with what you are proposing ... you may have to 'go off the grid' more like in the mountains area and even that could be difficult...
