Buying or Selling a Home/Doors open in/out

Question
I am originally from Queens, NY. I have lived all around the country but currently I reside in FL. It seems like all the doors in Florida open outward, which to someone that grew up in NYC, seems like a huge security problem. If the door opens in, I can at least jam my foot against the door to keep someone out. Since moving here, I have been puzzled with the question that you posted. Why do some doors open outward instead of inward?

Answer
Dear Frank,

Thank you for your question!

I'm pondering your statement aboout the doors in Florida opening outward.  In a private entrance of a house or condo, starting at your front door, the screen door should open outwards, but the "front" door would open inwards.  Otherwise inside the home one will find bedroom doors to open inward, away from the hallway.  Closet doors will open outward because they can't open inward, they are full of shelves and clothes so the door can't open inward.

I hope this makes sense to you.  Let me know if I'm correct.

Thanks,

Hans

There are many questions buyers and sellers have about the process of buying or selling a home that they are afraid to ask or that might seem too simple to ask. For instance: in a house, why do some doors open in and some doors open out?
