Buying or Selling a Home/Historic Property

Question
I am interested in a property in Saint James, NY. It's a Circa 1902 General Store/Farm Colonial property, located in the heart of town. Problem is, I can't find a single document on this property showing what it originally looked like, who owned it, etc. The realtor showing the property has been painfully UNhelpful. Any thoughts on resources I could use to find out more about this house?

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Marianne,

Thank you for your question.

Your first step should be to go to town hall and look up the property records there.

The owner should have a title report from when they bought the property.  Maybe your agent can get a copy.  If not, you could spend some money and have your attorney order a title search.

The county court house should have records of deeds for the property and you are free to search there.

I hope this helps you, it sounds exciting.

I am able to answer questions related to buying or selling residential real estate in New York. There are many questions buyers and sellers have about the process of buying or selling a home that they are afraid to ask or that might seem too simple to ask. For instance: in a house, why do some doors open in and some doors open out?
