Buying or Selling a Home/Home ownership after marriage

Question
In the state of South Carolina, does a spouse automatically have ownership of a home once they are married? This is a home that was my husband's before we got married.

Answer
In most states, Pam, it must specifically say the first spouse has deeded title to the second spouse. He can give you title with him via quit-claim or warranty deed. But, I strongly suggest you consult with a REAL ESTATE attorney to make sure that is the case in SC.

Otherwise, the house is still ONLY your husband's.

I do wish you well, Pam.

Expertise

With more than 41 years as a real estate broker, I can solve most any problem presented. If I can`t, I do my research. Problems with mortgages, trust deeds, foreclosures, odd ways of conveying titles. Most any good Realtor can answer questions satisfactorily, but I answer questions that most cannot. Also, ask about my hard-copy newsletter, The Landed Gentry. It can also be sent to you via PDF.
