Question when my divorce was final in 2004, I signed a quit claim over to my ex-husband. Now I find out he hasn't paid taxes since 2002! Is there anything I can do to reclaim the property and get him off the title/deed? We have a child together and I have been living with friends since I left him in 2000. I am wonder if the quit claim deed is still valid if he was already defaulting on the taxes???
Answer If you want to know who is on title of the property, go to the county recorder or courthouse (or call them) and find that information out. If it turns out that he is the only one on the title, then there is nothing you can do other than buying, or some consideration the property back from him. If it turns out that he loses the property for not paying the taxes, then for sure you can't do anything about it. You can also call the tax collector and find out who is the owner of the property. I wish you well, Jen.
With more than 41 years as a real estate broker, I can solve most any problem presented. If I can`t, I do my research. Problems with mortgages, trust deeds, foreclosures, odd ways of conveying titles. Most any good Realtor can answer questions satisfactorily, but I answer questions that most cannot. Also, ask about my hard-copy newsletter, The Landed Gentry. It can also be sent to you via PDF.
