Buying or Selling a Home/Selling my house below appraised value

Question
My house was appraised at $430,000.00, I am selling it to my Friend for $310,000.00, I was told that I would have to pay a gift tax and the IRS would flag me because I am selling the house way below what the house is worth. Is that correct?

Answer
Hi Loretta,
Thank you for the question.

The best source of an answer to this question would be to call the Internal Revenue Service.

Your situation is full of possible tax consequences, from possible gift tax to capital gains tax now or in the future and I do not want to give you the wrong advice.

There are many questions buyers and sellers have about the process of buying or selling a home that they are afraid to ask or that might seem too simple to ask. For instance: in a house, why do some doors open in and some doors open out?
