Buying or Selling a Home/how to get an abstract

Question
I am selling my home but cannot find the abstract to my house.  I have refinanced 2 or 3 times and I believe that all the original paperwork is lost.  How, if any, can I obtain another abstract either by myself or with the help of a lawyer.

Answer
You don't need your abstract at this time. Your Realtor will have it prior to meeting with you to sign the listing. Or the local real estate attorney.

Or for whatever reason, you can walk into a title (abstract) company and ask for the information you want. I don't believe they would charge you. For your information, paperwork on property is of little importance. All the information that counts for anything is in the county's computers. When you sell your property, the escrow company or the title company, as part of the job, searches the title of your house for any liens or encumbrances and reports it to the the closing agent.

I do wish you well.

With more than 41 years as a real estate broker, I can solve most any problem presented. If I can`t, I do my research. Problems with mortgages, trust deeds, foreclosures, odd ways of conveying titles. Most any good Realtor can answer questions satisfactorily, but I answer questions that most cannot. Also, ask about my hard-copy newsletter, The Landed Gentry. It can also be sent to you via PDF.
