Buying or Selling a Home/Can I buy a home without a Realtor

Question
Hi Dick,

Wanted to find out can I legally, buy a home without a realtor in California, If the person selling there home has it listed with a realtor?

Arnold.

Answer
Anyone may buy a home from the owner without a Realtor, Arnold. If the seller has his home listed with a broker, then it's the seller who is obligated to pay a commission. There is no law in California that says you must buy a house with a Realtor. If the seller is NOT listed with a broker, then you and the seller can do your own negotiations.

Of course, to protect your interests, you should have someone with expertise to guide you to make sure the proper documents are included in your transaction.

So, go ahead and make your offer. Chances are the seller is going to bring his Realtor into the picture to help negotiate for him.

I do wish you well.
