Buying or Selling a Home/land for log home

Question
Hi Liznarr,
What should we look for when buying land in NH, VT, or ME (The White Mountain belt), to build a log cabin on for a permanent residence?
Thank you,
Randy

Answer
Hi Randy,

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but if you plan to build a permanent residence IN the mountains, I would definitely be interested in the proximity to shopping and medical.

Additionally, I would investigate the cost to build what you have in mind with several local builders in the area you decide on BEFORE you make an offer on your mountain property.  Also check on the property tax structuring so you won't be in for any surprise there.

If you are going for the big view, this type land will be more pricey than the same size lot without a great view.

Parking space would be an additional consideration.  I've seen some absolutely magnificent homes with great views in the Smoky Mountains, but some only had space (comfortably) for about three vehicles.  (These were lots on the “sides” of mountains, not in valleys where parking space would be more plentiful.)  Depending on the visitors you might have at any given time, limited parking may or may not be a major concern for you.

Finally, I would want to know that in very severe weather, the road-clearing ability of the county in which you choose to live has adequate resources and equipment to properly keep the roads clear and safe.

If you had other questions that I did not address, please write again.  Good luck to you, and thanks for writing.

Regards,

Elizabeth Narr
