Buying or Selling a Home/moving in to our new home

Question
Me and my husband just bought our first home and the people living in told us the day we sign off on the house they will be out in 24 hours and now they won't get out for 3 more weeks can we start to charge them rent? Because now we are paying the interest and the insurance on the home that we are not even in yet.

Answer
That's a lot of damn nerve, Judy. If you have a Realtor representing you on the purchase of that property, have him/her take care of that problem. Otherwise, you must get a real estate attorney real quick and get them out of there and/or pay you for the days they are there AND to check to make sure they leave the property in good condition and have not taken anything out of there they are not supposed to.

This can become a very nasty situation, Judy. And make sure that the old owners pay for all your costs in getting them out of there. DO NOT HESITATE!

I do wish you well.

Expertise

With more than 41 years as a real estate broker, I can solve most any problem presented. If I can`t, I do my research. Problems with mortgages, trust deeds, foreclosures, odd ways of conveying titles. Most any good Realtor can answer questions satisfactorily, but I answer questions that most cannot. Also, ask about my hard-copy newsletter, The Landed Gentry. It can also be sent to you via PDF.
