Question
Is there a way to put an alternate name to my own on the public record? I
would like to keep my location private as a have a violent ex-husband. It
seems too easy to look up someone's address simply by entering it into the
appraisal district's database. A friend of mine suggested setting up a
"foundation" so that the house could be under the name of the foundation
rather than my own name. But this sounds rather complicated. By the way, I
haven't purchased a house yet.
Dear Kathleen;
It would be a matter to discuss with the closing attorney. Since you have to prove that you are who you say you are when purchasing a property, you may have to legally change your name or put the property in a different name like your friend suggested. You will have to check with an attorney regardless in order to do anything.
