Buying or Selling a Home/real estate agents' schedules

Question
Hi. I was wondering if realtors really have complete control over their time? Can they start and end the day when they want?

Answer
Dear Danielle;
First of all, I would like to apologize for not answering you right away.  I am not receiving my questions from allexperts.  I don't understand what the problem is but it is upsetting to me since I like to be prompt with my answers.

Now for your answer...
Real estate agents are independent contractors and make their own hours unless they have an agreement with the company for which they work that is different.  Some agents work for builders and have set hours at sales offices.  In addition, many sign contracts with their brokerages and there could be agreements that state they will serve on phones or in office time (floor duty) for a certain amount of hours per week or month.  Beyond that, their hours are their own to spend any way they want.  Most agents find that they work a minimum of 50 hours a week however.  While their schedules are flexible this is a blessing and a curse in one.  Many times, I have been called away from a party, dinner, or a long weekend to show a home or write an offer.  We are at the beck and call of our clients.  I know that personally, I try to keep my days more open and spend time in the evenings doing my reports, paper work and phone contacts. As managing broker-owner of my own company I make myself available to my agents who work for me and this limits the freedom I have to make my own schedule, but I still find that there is plenty of time to run errands, attend meetings, and spend some time the way I choose.

I hope this answer helps you.

Sincerely,
Jessica Bryan

Experience

Anyone who is in this business and who dedicates oneself to professionalism has continued to take classes and along with it,additional credentials, awards and honors. I can list a host of them, but my greatest accomplishments happen to be those of getting first time buyers (who didn't think they could afford to buy a home)into a home of their dreams. The look on their faces when I hand over the keys is worth all of the hard work.
