Buying & Selling Thru Ebay & Other Auctions/Selling Collectibles

Hello.   My parents are deceased and I live in their home. This year I ran across two apparently valuable items amid all their stuff. I ran a search on E-bay and found wildly differing prices for these items. One was an early Beatles album, still in the shrink-wrap: about 2K up to about 40K.  The other was a first edition Hemingway from 1927: about 3 to 6 hundred dollars. I looked at another music site (last summer)and saw many more of this same record in many conditions and editions. I can't remember the site but I may have it down somewhere....

I got so confused I put the record back where I found it and dismissed the issue from my mind. I dislike selling things and I don't want to become an expert in E-bay, even for this.

How can I tell what these are really worth and not just what some people are fishing and hoping for? And is there hope for a neat, rapid transaction?

Hi Jim,

Luckily, this is an easy question to answer.  When you research items that you want to sell on eBay, you must always research the COMPLETED items and NOT the current listings.  Up to now, it sounds like that is what you've done and it can be very confusing.  Asking is one thing, but the bottom line is always WHAT DID IT ACTUALLY SELL FOR?

Here are the steps --

From the eBay Home Page, click on ADVANCED SEARCH (a link to the right of the large blue eBay search button)

Nest screen, type search term into white box

Scroll down and click box next to COMPLETED ITEMS

Search results appears and you'll want to make note of GREEN vs BLACK.  Green sold, black didn't.  Resort search by "Highest First."  Also note the total number of search results and c compare it to the number of items that actually sold.  This will help you to determine FAIR MARKET VALUE.

I hope this information is useful.

Happy holidays!
