Buying a computer system/Laptop - Sony, Toshiba, Dell

Question
I have looked at several laptops and would like to know which you feel might be the better brand, Sony,Toshiba or Dell. I'm looking at a good processor in the 8000, with 4 gig ram. I am replacing a 7 year old desktop, so I don't change computers often, only when I have to so I'm looking for reliability and longevity. I use it for Quicken, Excel, Word and the net. I do open several windows at one time.
Also, is a Centrino or Centrino 2 processor better than just a Core 2 duo?

Answer
Ah, a great many questions, which get a great many answers.

I'm not sure what you mean by the line "I'm looking at a good processor in the 8000", although to answer everything else in a list:

1. 4GB of RAM is a good move, especially with Windows Vista

2. Brand-wise, I prefer Dell, however all three are good choices, go with whichever offers the best incentive for you, be it looks, price, or extras

3. Centrino/Centrino 2 is a technology platform, including Core 2 Duo, the chipset, and wireless networking technology, so in a sense, it is better, however its like comparing apples and apple pie

I have nearly two decades of experience in IT, computer repair, and related fields and will attempt to provide the most solid, brand-agnostic advice when it comes time to purchase a new computer, or upgrade an existing machine. I can answer anything from the seemingly basic to the downright complicated - and will do my best to provide this information in a clear and concise manner.

Experience

I have been an enthusiast of PC's for many years, and can answer questions about the purchase/use of a new computer or the purchase, installation, and use of upgrades for existing computers. There probably isn't a whole lot related to the home computer that I haven't seen over the years.
