Buying a computer system/ONE WAY PROCESSOR AND TWO WAY PROCESSORS
Expert: Bobbert - 11/10/2008
QuestionQUESTION: Hello,
AMD Opteron 1000 Series processors can be used in one-way servers and workstations
AMD Opteron 2000 Series processors can be used in two-way servers and workstations
AMD Opteron 8000 Series processors can be used in up to eight-way servers and workstations
What is the main difference between abeove one-way,two-way,8-way processors?
Thanks for your time and attenditon
ANSWER: The "way" which is being referred to is the number of physical processors or sockets the system is compatable with. In the case of the Opteron 8000, one to eight physical CPUs, in the case of the Opteron 2000, one to two physical CPUs, and Opteron 1000's can use a single CPU only.

ok
What is the main difference between 1000series opteron&phenom
in capable or what? both are single cups.
some body told me opteron is capable for doing 24*7
working days.but phenom is not like that.
If you want to buy 24*7 work buy opteron else buy phenom.
is it right or not?
AnswerNo, that is incorrect, Phenom is a consumer targetted part, it is also AMD's triple/quad-core product, while most Opteron's are dual-core products (honestly I'm not entirely 100% on which Opteron badged models are based on the same silicon used in the Phenom models, if its a triple or quad core, it is guranteed to be the same silicon used in the Phenom parts though).
You can use either the Opteron or the Phenom for 24/7 computing (any CPU in a decently built machine should be capable of this with no issues, the only limitations should be software and up-time of the power grid). Now, depending on your application, Opteron may be more viable, if you want multi-socket, such as Opteron 2000 or 8000 series, however for a single socket solution, I see nothing wrong with a Phenom processor.
The one thing to note, motherboards designed for the Opteron are designed for a commerical client, while motherboards designed for the Phenom are more likely designed for a power user or workstation client, this isn't to say they can't run 24/7, but it does mean theres a lot of extra components that may get in the way of a very "clean and tight" server implementation.
