Buying a computer system/Acer desktop computers

Question
Are Acer desktops any good generally? I have found one with plenty of RAM and a large hard drive with 64 plus 2 or duocore for $500 or $600 but I am not familiar with the brand except that they own Gateway and Emachines which do not seem to be the best.

Answer
Honestly there isn't anything wrong with Acer, or eMachines, or Gateway, all are reputable companies, that sell more or less the same OEM equipment. Trying to compare them off against each other is like trying to compare McDonalds off against Wendy's off against Burger King (or any other similar analogy you may like), yes each individual one may have little "isms" that make certain people swear by them, but honestly its basically the same thing.

If you've found a system you're happy with, go for it, I don't see you having any massive problems for buying an Acer, consider that its a $500-$600 PC though, so don't expect it to perform like a $17,000 Sun workstation, but it should still work, and handle a decent number of tasks.

Expertise

I have nearly two decades of experience in IT, computer repair, and related fields and will attempt to provide the most solid, brand-agnostic advice when it comes time to purchase a new computer, or upgrade an existing machine. I can answer anything from the seemingly basic to the downright complicated - and will do my best to provide this information in a clear and concise manner.

Experience

I have been an enthusiast of PC's for many years, and can answer questions about the purchase/use of a new computer or the purchase, installation, and use of upgrades for existing computers. There probably isn't a whole lot related to the home computer that I haven't seen over the years.
