Buying a computer system/PC Purchase for specific tasks

Question
Thank you for your time!

I am a stock trader. I use an aircard for internet access (3g). I import real time data all day through the internet into an excel file that is 94 megs large. I also run a macro automation program. Due to genetic algorithms I run in excel, I must use Windows XP.

What is most important to me in my purchase is speed and stability. Nothing else will run on this computer. My budget is about 1k for the box. What are the critical components for this system, Quad Core, Memory?

I will eventually run several of these large excel files in real time.

Thank you
Dave

Answer
Processor power and memory capacity, would be the most important for speed and stability. Assuming you've got your data security dealt with, you shouldn't have to worry much about that. I'd look at a powerful dual or quad core CPU, such as the Intel Q6600, and 2-3GB of RAM (XP won't really benefit from much more than 3GB of RAM, so why pay more? (now, if you can get 4GB cheaper than 3, why not?)). You might also consider a capable multi-head graphics solution, but thats more of a personal preference.

I have nearly two decades of experience in IT, computer repair, and related fields and will attempt to provide the most solid, brand-agnostic advice when it comes time to purchase a new computer, or upgrade an existing machine. I can answer anything from the seemingly basic to the downright complicated - and will do my best to provide this information in a clear and concise manner.

Experience

I have been an enthusiast of PC's for many years, and can answer questions about the purchase/use of a new computer or the purchase, installation, and use of upgrades for existing computers. There probably isn't a whole lot related to the home computer that I haven't seen over the years.
