Buying a computer system/laptop

QuestionHi! I currently have a mac laptop and my screen cracked and I need to buy a new computer (I went to the store to ask them about fixing it and it will cost me about 800$ which is basically the same price as a new pc). I really only use my mac mainly for keeping my music and picture files, going on the internet, skyping, and emails. I also like the fact that it stays virus and spyware free. I am looking to buy a new laptop but since I dont have that much money I dont think I can afford to spend another $1000.00 on another mac. I wanted to know your suggestions for another laptop that is affordable and practical and has a good operating system. I dont know much about computers and what to look for when purchasing one and thats what I loved about the macs, that there wasnt much to choose from because they all are such high quality. Do you think that I should save up and just get another mac but not buy the apple protection program warranty (I had it for this computer and never used it and when my screen cracked it was the only thing it didnt cover) or I should try to aim for a cheaper computer like an HP or Dell that is more affordable and still works just as well. Also will it be easy to transfer all of my mac information over to a PC. Please help me to find the best laptop for my money. Thank you so much for your help! =)
AnswerI don't see any distinct advantage to Apple hardware over that from HP or Dell, in terms of quality or components. The operating system might be a selling point for some users, however with good browsing choices and proper anti-virus software, you can ensure a good operating environment under any OS. Apple OS X is not spyware and virus "free", there simply exist less known pieces of malware, with this in mind, along with aforementioned good usage habits, any operating system can be "secure".
Given that you've listed no tasks which require any specialized hardware or massive amounts of processing power, I would pick mostly on whats affordable from the myriad of current manufacturers (such as Gateway, Dell, Compaq, HP, or Asus). Basically let your wallet decide, something in the $500-$750 range should be more than suitable.
