Buying a computer system/refurbished laptop or netbook

Question
Want to purchase a simple computer for surfing.  Have seen many deals but not sure how to insure a honest dealer for used or refurb items.  I know Dell etc. sell these but of course their price is more.  May be worth it but trying for a simple suggestion for 300.00 or under if possible.  So many  choices.
Thanks,

Answer
Honestly, I wouldn't suggest buying a used or refurbished laptop from anywhere but a manufacturer, as you risk not having an honored warranty, and the system is likely massively overpriced. If your budget doesn't allow for a portable system, a number of desktop solutions can be had within $300 from vendors such as Dell and Hewlett-Packard. Another alternative within your budget may be the purchase of a netbook, if portability is required, as there are options which fit within your budget. I would suggest Asus and Acer regarding netbooks.

I have nearly two decades of experience in IT, computer repair, and related fields and will attempt to provide the most solid, brand-agnostic advice when it comes time to purchase a new computer, or upgrade an existing machine. I can answer anything from the seemingly basic to the downright complicated - and will do my best to provide this information in a clear and concise manner.

Experience

I have been an enthusiast of PC's for many years, and can answer questions about the purchase/use of a new computer or the purchase, installation, and use of upgrades for existing computers. There probably isn't a whole lot related to the home computer that I haven't seen over the years.
