Buying a computer system/New computer

Question
Hello, I am looking to buy a new computer this spring. Speed is a must, and must be able to multi-task. I use the Internet, listen music, run my small business on it, and look at photos. I am not a gamer, so I don't need a crazy configuration! I don't care if it is brand name, but I don't want to get in trouble either.... What do you suggest?
Thank you,
Jason

Answer
Well, what kind of budget are you working with? And how intensive is your small business on the system? (more of what the system is going to be doing, for example if you're a day trader, thats going to have different requirements than if you're a mechanic and simply keep books, or a photographer using the system to edit and distribute your work)

Off the top of my head, I'd just go with something inexpensive from Dell, Gateway, etc, think $500-$650, as none of the tasks you've listed are exceptionally demanding, and none of them require specialized hardware, you're pretty free in your decision making process. You might look for a promotion that includes a free monitor or printer (or some other freebies) to add onto the purchase, Dell generally has promotions like this for back-to-school and at other times of the year (early summer/late spring is generally one of the better times to buy a computer, contrasted to late winter (as the holiday sales have already passed)).

If you've got any questions, feel free to post a follow-up.

Expertise

I have nearly two decades of experience in IT, computer repair, and related fields and will attempt to provide the most solid, brand-agnostic advice when it comes time to purchase a new computer, or upgrade an existing machine. I can answer anything from the seemingly basic to the downright complicated - and will do my best to provide this information in a clear and concise manner.

Experience

I have been an enthusiast of PC's for many years, and can answer questions about the purchase/use of a new computer or the purchase, installation, and use of upgrades for existing computers. There probably isn't a whole lot related to the home computer that I haven't seen over the years.
