Question
QUESTION: I am looking to buy a new desktop pc.  I am leaning towards HP.  My biggest question is should I get Intel or AMD system?  I am an average homeowner that is looking for a mid to upper level system.  Second question is what brand do you suggest?  Thanks

ANSWER: It depends on what you intend to do with the machine, as to what you should be looking to purchase. What kinds of tasks do you need the machine to perform for you? What kind of budget are we working with?

QUESTION: Well general web surfing, home video editing and picture editing are the main things.  Budget around $1000 give or take a couple hundred.  Thanks

Answer
Generally you don't have exceptionally high performance demands, based on the tasks you've described; which means you can purchase more or less "anything" modern and be well served. I would look at what kind of promotions Dell and HP are currently running (usually you can get a "free" upgrade or "free" component, like a monitor or printer) - your average entry-level to above entry-level system in the $600-$800 range will be more than suitable. For example the Inspiron 560 or 570 series from Dell. If you prefer HP, then go ahead and buy an HP; there is no consequence (they are going to be the same internally).

Given your budget and needs, you may also consider an iMac, which will be equally suitable (if not having a slight edge on Windows in terms of video editing applications for non-professionals).

I have nearly two decades of experience in IT, computer repair, and related fields and will attempt to provide the most solid, brand-agnostic advice when it comes time to purchase a new computer, or upgrade an existing machine. I can answer anything from the seemingly basic to the downright complicated - and will do my best to provide this information in a clear and concise manner.

Experience

I have been an enthusiast of PC's for many years, and can answer questions about the purchase/use of a new computer or the purchase, installation, and use of upgrades for existing computers. There probably isn't a whole lot related to the home computer that I haven't seen over the years.
